How to Measure a Gate

How to measure a gate

A: Head  B:Heel  C: Top Spell

When measuring a gate, allowances need to be made for posts or pillars, ironmongery and ground clearance. We will advise you on the best size posts for your gates, as well as the correct ironmongery depending on your requirements.

Height of the gate

For all gates the height quoted is the actual height of the physical gate; it does not take into account ground clearance, which is usually around 2” (5cm). Therefore when fitted the finished height of the gate will be 2” (5cm) taller (unless the ground rises, in which case a greater clearance level will be required).
If you are measuring a gate that is already in situ and that you would like replicating, please measure the physical height of the gate (excluding the ground clearance) and advise us if any adjustments have been made to the ground clearance to allow for rising ground.
Unless otherwise stated, our gates are made to the height of the top spell, with the gate head and heel normally rising 4” higher than the top spell.

When gate posts are fitted

Please how you would like the gate posts to hang – in front, on the back or in-between the posts.
Measure the distance between the insides of both gate posts in 3 places; ie. top, middle and bottom.
Advise us of the 3 different measurements. This gives the total gap size of both leaves between the posts; but the total size of the gates will be different depending on the ironmongery used and how they are to hang.

When brick or stone pillars are fitted

Again, please let us know how you would like the gate posts to hang – in front, on the back or in-between the posts.
Measure the distance between the insides of both gate posts in 3 places; ie. top, middle and bottom. Advise us of the 3 different measurements. This gives the total gap size of both leaves between the pillars; but the total size of the gates will be different depending on the ironmongery used and how they are to hang.
If there are hooks or pins to hang the gates on already in place, please also measure the positioning of each of them from the base of the pillar to the bottom of each of the pins.

When no gate posts or pillars are fitted

Please tell us how you would like to hang the gates on wooden gate posts or brick or stone pillars. Also please state whether the gates will hang in front, on the back or in-between posts or pillars.
Measure the total distance where the gates are to be hung. Advise us of the 3 different measurements. This gives the total gap size that will include both gates and gate posts or pillars plus relevant gaps for ironmongery.

When the gates are to be automated

Please let us know if you wish to automate the gates and what type of automation system you intend to use and we will strengthen the gates accordingly.

When the gates are to go on rising or uneven ground

If the gates open onto rising or uneven ground, please let us know and we will advise on suitable clearance levels and the correct ironmongery.
